It was only recently reported by the Japanese media that "38-year-old IQ180 Taiwanese Genius IT Minister" praised him for making professional mask maps and epidemic prevention routes through big data and artificial intelligence in the prevention of epidemic diseases, to check Taiwan's epidemic prevention. She is a member of the Executive Yuan's Administrative Committee, Tang Feng. She has more than 20 years of remote working experience, and is currently the official who is best at working remotely with digital tools.

Four years ago, Tang Feng suggested that working from home would be the future work trend. Now, what quantitative and qualitative changes does she think this trend has produced? As a senior teleworker, how can she overcome her loneliness and make a difference between work and life? The following is a summary of Tang Feng's interview with Shang Zhou:

Method to resolve strong loneliness "fixed time every week, go out to the common space"

Shang Zhou asked (hereinafter referred to as Q): This time, because of the epidemic, you started an experiment of working at home from a global company. In fact, you did this very early. What do you think is the difference between working at home and the past?

Tang Feng answer (hereinafter referred to as the answer): I am indeed a senior teleworker, including to this day, I still work remotely, but not at home, working at home is just a form of remote work.

When I heard telework 3 years ago, everyone would think of working from home, but after 3 years like myself, when I work remotely, I often stay in the Innovation Experiment Center of Ren'ai Road. I will stay there for a few more days a week because Until 11pm. There are delicious foods, the Internet is fast, and various teams have been stationed, giving me a feeling of home.

This is a little home away from home (like another home). Although it is not really my home, everyone still feels like family in this co-working space. This form is popular due to the development of broadband.

Question: In the past, when talking about working from home, everyone felt that the disadvantage was strong loneliness. However, when the field is not restricted, it is not necessary to work from home. Will loneliness decrease?

answer! The ventilation conditions of our social innovation center are very good. Now the ventilation conditions are more important than anything! (Laughs) The internet is fast. With these two conditions, there is a team working on it next to it. There is less loneliness.

Q: How did the loneliness of working from home be resolved when there was no such common space before?

A: What I did with another colleague before was a tool for everyone to work remotely. Of course, you need to use your own products, and we soon discovered two things: mainly loneliness, and there was no off-hours.

How can we solve it? My colleagues and I go to work at Pinglin Coffee Shop about a day a week, and we can have some social interactions with not only the boss but also regular customers. Just when I drove to the coffee shop, it also drove me out of the house. Therefore, picking a fixed time once or twice a week and walking out of the house into a common space is equivalent to the concept of a satellite office, which is very effective in alleviating loneliness.

Create common points in time “experience of making the same food and drinking the same wine”

In addition, I talked to a senior teleworker (friend) who would also deliver red wine from California in the United States. It is not expensive wine, but this is the wine he would drink. We will start a video, drink the same wine together, and socialize together.

Although the spaces are different, the feeling of synchronization is not just to see a layer of glass, but also to order the same food, and at least the same similar social experience.

There is a sense of loneliness when working from home. Except for work, I talk about nothing but the other party doesn't feel it. For example, if you say that the weather is fine today, in fact it's raining there; generally, you can't talk about the topics you can talk to. This way, you will feel lonely. If you create a common point, such as ordering the same food, or gathering at a fixed time, there will always be social topics to talk about.

Set life / work switching mechanism "25 minutes after hard work, 5 minutes rest"

Q: What should I do if it is difficult to work from home? Feeling free but actually not free?

Answer: This is divided into two things. One is being interrupted by interruptions. Of course, we don't want to be interrupted by individuals when we work, but on the other hand, we don't want to be interrupted by work all the time, so it is important to set a time boundary. Many remote workers will receive a boss or colleague to ask you to deal with it now. There is no way to wait until 9 o'clock the next day. If you are interrupted at any time, the quality of life is not necessary.

The method I take is called the "tomato clock". Everyone sends messages and writes emails to me. I will definitely go back and watch, but I will go back in half an hour. That is to say, every hour starts at 25 minutes. I just concentrate on doing work or other things.

For example, when I do research or discuss papers during work hours, I will never let my phone or anything interfere with me; but I ’m punctual. At 25, I will check my phone or check my email. I have 5 minutes to deal with the interruption; then I deal with the next 25 minutes to focus on, and then 5 minutes to be interrupted.

From a colleague's perspective, I will definitely answer his message in half an hour, but within this half an hour, I will not be interrupted for up to 25 minutes. This is very important. If you can set such a boundary, from such a mental health perspective, you will not have other thoughts in your mind, but will be forced to deal with it. As a result, both sides will not be able to handle it, and there is a possibility of relaxation. Sex.

The second is that in addition to the time boundary, the boundary of space is also important. For example, working remotely, you can choose a cafe near your home and see it as an extension of your home. You work in a coffee shop, and you are already on your way home, and you are in a more relaxed state. Even if there is no cafe near the home, you should arrange ritual things, such as opening a door at home, entering a special space, and then you can relax after you get out. If the home is not large enough to be separated by space, you can work at the desktop and play while using the iPad. Everyone can choose this is the work signal, that is the way to relax the signal.

Small Dictionary _ Tomato Clock

The tomato clock is a time management method invented in the late 1980s. It takes 25 minutes as a long stage to concentrate on doing things, and then uses 5 minutes to do other chores or rest. There are two cycles every hour.

The epidemic catalyzes more ways of working "will not all become distant, but will change to mixed mode later"

Q: This epidemic led to large-scale remote work. Do you think there will be any general changes in corporate organizational culture?

A: After giving everyone the experience of working from home for the first time this time, although everyone will not become full distance after the epidemic, will you think next time, really need 10 people to go north on the high-speed rail to meet? Or just come alone? I feel that at some point, moving a little further away is good for everyone.

Then it will become mixed mode, everyone starts to think about what must be together. For example, a company employee camp is held every year. At this time, close communication between people is important. However, if the weekly meeting is held, everyone does not have to be in the same building, and everyone will start to do organizational discussions.

The second is investment. In addition to physical space, there are slowly more digital spaces for everyone to use. For example, a new employee may not have to visit the dock. He can view shared documents in a digital space and have a basic understanding of the work area. Now that everyone has accumulated some digital experience during the epidemic, after the epidemic is over, it can slowly become an organizational culture.

Q: Which industries are suitable for remote work in the future?

Answer: It should be said that your work equipment is where you can get it. So to put it simply, I felt that the surgery was difficult before, and I had to do it manually, but after the Da Vinci machine appeared, I found it was not; as long as the bandwidth is sufficient, not only can the operation be performed in the next room, or even the next county and city. Bandwidth level is good. I think the focus is not on which industry, but whether the tools required by this industry have reached the level you are on the scene.

Top political leaders can also work remotely "When the disaster center is opened, it is just a video conference"

Q: Even the Iranian Vice President was infected in this outbreak. If there is force majeure, do you think it will be feasible for civil servants to work from home in the future?

Answer: It is feasible! In fact, we have been using video conferencing for many years. When the disaster center was opened, we originally did video conferencing through various places. The entire command system now has a long-distance method, mainly for disaster response. I tour the whole Taiwan, usually by long distance.

In fact, the main developer of mask maps is in Tainan. They do n’t need to come to Taipei to meet in the process. They have always made mask maps in Tainan with their local friends within two working days. There is no need to go to Taipei and retain talent. in Tainan.

Q: Can civil servants fully work from home?

Answer: It is roughly divided into two. The highly confidential teleconferences must have security guarantees in each other's place. This must be paid attention to and it is also a difficulty.

The other is field limitation. If your job is to do geological surveys and the like, theoretically you can do it with drones and robots, but now the cost is quite high.
